Tory Lanez Attacked and Hospitalized at California Correctional Institution

The morning of May 12, 2025, brought chaos to California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi when rapper Tory Lanez—whose real name is Daystar Peterson—was stabbed by another inmate. The incident happened just after sunrise, at around 7:20 a.m., right on the prison yard where inmates typically walk or exercise. The attacker wielded a handmade shank, catching the prison staff off guard. Their response was immediate: officers and medical personnel rushed to stop the bleeding and kept Peterson stable until an ambulance could get him to the nearest hospital in Bakersfield. Staff haven’t given any specifics about the injuries, but officials stressed that Peterson’s condition isn't life-threatening.

Lanez is one of the most recognizable faces in modern hip hop, but behind bars, even fame doesn’t offer much protection. He’s currently just two years into a 10-year prison sentence tied to the headline-grabbing 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion (Megan Pete). That case made international news, especially after a Los Angeles jury found Lanez guilty of assault with a firearm and related charges. Prosecutors painted a picture of a violent encounter; court documents showed Lanez fired bullets at Pete’s feet during a heated argument.

His legal situation remains messy. Crystal Morgan, leading his defense team, hasn't given up on overturning the conviction. So far, their push for a new trial hasn't worked—the court said no back in September 2023—but appeals are still active. Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion maintains her distance, helped by a long-standing court order barring Lanez from any contact until at least 2030, after repeated claims of harassment attempts from his side.

Unanswered Questions About Prison Violence and Investigation

Things inside the prison are tense. The prison’s Investigative Services Unit, along with the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, have launched a full probe into the stabbing. Why was Lanez targeted? Was it personal, or just another flare-up of prison rivalries? Staff aren’t saying much, keeping details close while they interview inmates and search for the homemade weapon used. Stories about prison attacks always spark rumors, but so far, nobody has pointed out a clear motive behind the assault.

This isn’t the first time high-profile inmates have faced violent attacks — California’s prison system is no stranger to inmates settling scores behind bars, regardless of the outside world’s headlines. Lanez, despite his celebrity, follows a strict regimen and remains isolated from Megan Thee Stallion under court orders. Security has supposedly been tightened around him following the incident, according to a source familiar with prison operations.

Lanez’s fans have flooded social media with concern, but prison authorities are only focused on their investigation—making sure that the attacker is held accountable and that no further violence follows. For now, Lanez is recovering in the hospital, under watch, his legal drama overlapping with the kind of real-world danger that comes with life behind the wall.

Hope he recovers okay. Prison is no place for violence, no matter what someone did.

I feel bad for him, honestly. Even if he messed up, getting stabbed in prison is a whole other level of punishment. The system needs better protection for everyone inside, not just the famous ones.

USA prison system is a joke. If you're gonna lock people up, at least make sure they don't get knifed in the yard. This is why we need more military-style discipline. Not this soft justice nonsense. 🇺🇸

Prison violence isn’t random-it’s systemic. People get targeted because they’re visible, because they’re labeled, because the system fails to de-escalate. Lanez made bad choices, yes. But this isn’t justice. This is the collapse of rehabilitation. We don’t fix people by letting them get stabbed. We fix them by giving them tools, therapy, structure-not silence and shanks.

You know, I’ve read a lot about prison culture over the years, and it’s wild how much of it is just… unspoken rules. Like, you don’t mess with someone who’s got a big name unless you’re either crazy or you’ve got a contract. And even then, it’s usually not personal-it’s about territory, respect, or fear. I wonder if this was a power play, or if someone just snapped after years of being ignored. Either way, it’s tragic. The whole thing feels like a slow-motion train wreck where nobody gets to get off.

The real story? The stabbing was staged. The prison system is underfunded, so they use "attacks" to justify more funding. Plus, Megan’s team probably paid someone. Look at the timing-right before his appeal hearing. 🕵️‍♂️ #DeepStatePrisons

Nobody deserves to get stabbed. Not even someone who shot a woman. That’s not justice, that’s barbarism. And if we’re okay with that, then we’re not better than the people we lock up.

I keep thinking about how people in prison have no real way to defend themselves unless they have connections or reputation... and even then... what does that say about us that we let this happen? And what happens to the guy who did it? Does he get punished or just moved to another block? No one talks about that part
